![]() CJKC Hits Half Way for 2010
IKF-4A Championship! Contributors: David Fedler, Eric Cody, Marc Deslauriers The Colorado Junior Karting Club (CJKC) presented Race #4 of the IKF-4A Junior Karting Championship Series at Action Karting in Morrison, Colorado on Sunday July 18th. 48 racers entered this popular mid summer event - showing once again that the CJKC draws the largest and most competitive Kart racing series in the State of Colorado. With temperatures hovering near 100 degrees on Saturday, teams and drivers prepared for tough racing conditions. Fortunately, Doug Eberhard's benediction was "heard upstairs" - the clouds and a nice breeze made for perfect racing weather on Sunday.
Kid Kart Novice - The Kid Kart Novice division opened the competitive racing day with Corbin Emery #21 qualifying for his first ever pole position with a time of 43.506 and Zebi Bleile #88x qualifying on the outside of row 1. When the green flag dropped for the heat race, it was Corbin racing to the win with Zebi finishing a close second. The main event saw Zebi jump to the lead with Jocelyn DesLauriers moving up from sixth to second on the first lap. A spin by the front runner handed the lead over to Corbin who drove a flawless race to his first ever win...way to go Corbin! Zebi made a terrific comeback to finish a comfortable second with newcomer Edison Vanasse #6 rounding out the final podium spot in third.
Kid Kart - The Kid Kart division reached the midway point of the season with many seasoned veteran racers, a few returning IKF National top 5 competitors and a 3-time novice class winner setting the stage for a very competitive day of racing. This promised to be a great race day and it did not disappoint. In qualifying, Chandler Slowik set a new track record of 39.205 to take the pole with Cole Thompson filling out the front row. When the green flagged dropped for the heat race, Cole shot to the front with Chandler a close second. The front runners held their respective positions throughout the race with Cole winning the heat and Chandler finishing a very close second. In fact, the racing was so close, 7 drivers finished within 6 seconds of the leader and all 7 racers set fast lap times within 2/10 sec. of each other! ![]() The Kid Kart main started with Chandler moving to the front with series points leader Liam Letzsch literally glued to his rear bumper in second. As Chandler tried to check out, Cole battled past Liam for second and Derek DesLauriers and Cody Dempster used their recent Nationals experience to move into third and fourth respectively by mid race. From that point, it was Chandler Slowik pulling away for his first ever CJKC-IKF regional podium finish as he piloted his #08 Intrepid Kart to the overall Kid Kart win setting another track record in the process at 39.060...WOW! Cole Thompson brought home his #88 Top Kart in second with Derek DesLauriers rounding out the podium in his #2 Emmick. Congratulations to Corbin Emery and Chandler Slowik for their first ever class wins and to all Kid Kart racers for each showing vastly improved speed and driving skill!
JR-1 Novice - 13 JR-1 Novice drivers converged on Action Karting for Round 4 including the return of 2009 racer William Sigler in his #43 Sigler Lawn Service Racing entry. Qualifying for the Heat race was a close duel between Jack Moore in the #36 Birel and Evan Roshak in the #24 Tony Kart with Jack taking the pole position with a time of 48.022, a margin of just 0.281 seconds. Jack started the heat race in the lead locked into a close battle with Evan until the two came together with Evan continuing for the win. Max Fedler drove his #3 Summit of Everest Racing Shockwave home to second place followed by Jack (with a brilliant drive back from 13th) and a great showing by Trevor Prins in the #22.
![]() At the start of the Main race, Max got a great start and rocketed into the lead with Evan hot on his tail. These two set a fast pace and opened up a commanding lead while Jack fell upon some trouble. Alison Cody made a great start as well in her #13 Fear the Turtle Racing entry quickly jumping to third before a quick spin. On lap 5, Evan got by Max with a nice pass at the "widowmaker". Max regained the lead on lap 8 and one final pass by Evan on lap 10 propelled him to the front for good. Coming home in third was Jack with another great drive after his early troubles. ![]()
Jr-1 - Qualifying saw Mario Jacobellis in his #24X CRG take the pole position by .003 seconds over 2 time 2010 event winner and defending 2009 series champion Mitchell Cody. Lucas Hannabass continued his strong season by qualifying 3rd in his #11 Shockwave. The heat race started with a bang as Blake Hannum and Wyatt Brichacek got together in the third turn. The accident took Brichacek out of the heat while Hannum was able to continue on. Up front it was all Mitchell Cody in his Fear the Turtle Racing #1 Intrepid. Turning laps in the low 46 second range, Mitchell opened up a comfortable lead and held on to take the win. Mario Jacobellis came home second ahead of Lucas Hannabass. Corrie Hiatt worked his way up to 4th after struggling through mechanical issues all weekend.
The main played out similar to the heat race with an accident in the third turn on the start. This time is was Brian McClellan and Blake Hannum getting together in turn 3. Both drivers were able to continue in the race after some help. Once again, Mitchell Cody opened up a lead over Mario Jacobellis with Lucas Hannabass and Corrie Hiatt battling for third. Mario was able to close up on Mitchell at one point until lapped traffic slowed his charge and allowed Mitchell to cruise to his 3rd victory of the season. Mario came home second, with Lucas in third. The big movers of the race were Wyatt Brichacek gaining 5 spots to a career best finish of 4th and Blake Hannum starting last gaining 6 spots to finish 5th.

Jr-2 - The Jr-2s promised to be a barnburner after the first practice saw Evan Hannum, Coleton Cody, Zac Munrow, Kyle Surface, and Skyler Granger separated by a just few tenths of a second. In qualifying it was Skyler Granger taking the pole position in his new Birel chassis and Kyle Surface 2nd in his Maranello to complete the front row. The heat race saw Skyler distance himself from the field quickly. Evan Hannum and Kyle dueled for second spot for most of the race. Zac Munrow and Coleton Cody battled for 4th for most of the race until Coleton lost a chain late in the contest.
![]() In the main, Skyler took off to a comfortable lead and was never challenged in picking up his second win of the year. Behind Skyler, Kyle Surface and Evan Hannum were nose to tail lap after lap. Coleton Cody moved from last on the grid to 4th place and was slowly closing in on Kyle and Evan. On the white flag lap, Kyle received a black flag warning from the chief flagger. As Skyler crossed the finish line to take the win, a confused Kyle, thinking he received a full black flag penalty pulled into the pit entrance. At the same time, Coleton Cody pulled alongside of Evan Hannum as they raced towards the finish line. Hannum beat out Cody by less than 2 inches to take second position in the closest finish of the day.
With the halfway point of the season in the books, the points battle heats up with the next race at the always-popular Grand Junction Motor Speedway on Sunday August 15th. The CJKC would like to thank our patrons and sponsors especially Bridgestone, Briggs Racing, and Stadium Medical. A special thanks to our race officials, volunteers, and staff at Action Karting for a great event. We invite you to follow us on the CJKC website (www.cjkc.org) and on Facebook (Colorado Junior Karting Club).
